What Every Man Wishes His Father Had Told Him

The other day I finished a book called What Every Man Wishes His Father Had Told Him by Byron Forrest Yawn. Before I sing the praises of the book I will warn you there are a few things that I didn't like but a lot of them were personal preferences more than non-negotiables. He seemed to over use the cliche culture a bit much. There were a lot of movie references in the book which is not always a bad thing. The only problem is if you are like my pastor who does not waste a lot of time watching popular movies you may not have any idea what he talking about, and there were a few times in the book that he uses some colloquialisms that even a more avid movie watcher such as myself (a fact that I am not proud of or recommend people to follow) did not have a clue what he was talking about. There were also some things that he insists about men that are really just his preference.

Over all though it was a great book. He really hits things hard and does not beat around the bush particularly in regards to moral purity in some of his closing chapters. True men hate it when you try to give them the truth softly or watered down. Tell me like it is. I think this is the main problem why men are leaving the church. The church is sugar coating everything with pink daises, and skirting around the real issues that men struggle with every day. Men are just tired of the hypocrisy.

Further more the personal testimonies that he puts in the book about his own experiences really bring all of his points home. He leaves the average man, a product of a broken dysfunctional home, no excuse. Trust me even as a more privileged man if you give a man a chance to make excuses he will take it. You will laugh cry and be inspired by Pastor Yawn's book. Also his recommendations in the back of the book about some manly activities were great. I think so much of manhood is go out and do it. Life will pass you by if you waste your time sitting in front of the TV watching cheesy commercials. Learn to take initiative. Quit sitting on lower parts blaming others for your grievances and go out and live your life for the glory of God. I heartily recommend it and if you need a copy please let me know I will buy you one.
