Ephesians 3:2-6

The Revelation of Christ Gives Us Comfort

Eph 3:2  If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: 

Eph 3:3  How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 

Eph 3:4  Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 

Eph 3:5  Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 

Eph 3:6  That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: 

           1.      The Gentile Church is Paul’s Special Family Inside the Greater Family of God – vs. 2

a.       Paul’s Apostleship was given to him by God

                                                              i.      Galatians 1:1 

b.      The people of Paul’s Apostleship are the Children of Abraham as well

                                                              i.      Galatians 3:6-9 

          2.      Paul is Given a Special Revelation of Christ Which He Wrote Down for All – vs. 3

a.       Paul was given revelation from God

                                                              i.      Galatians 1:11-12 

b.      Paul was also given the answer to the mystery of Christ - 1 Corinthians 4:1-2 

          3.      God Reveals Himself Through His Written Word – vs. 4

a.       Every believer should be reading and studying God’s Word for themselves

                                                              i.      2 Timothy 2:15 

b.      Reading and studying God’s word reveals to us the nature of Christ

                                                              i.      1 Timothy 3:16 

          4.      The Holy Spirit Enables the Apostles and Prophets to Accurately Record God’s Word – vs. 5

a.       The Holy Spirit inspired the prophets to write the Old Testament - 2 Peter 1:20-21 

b.      The Holy Spirit inspired the Apostles to write the New Testament - 2 Peter 3:2 

          5.      The Old and New Testaments Both Reveal God’s Plan to Bring in the Gentile Nations into God’s                Family – vs. 6

a.       The Jewish Nation would lose the promise of the covenant - Matthew 21:43 

b.      God’s People are now an amalgamation of both Jews and Gentiles - 1 Peter 2:9 

c.       The Old Testament confirms what Paul was saying - Isaiah 49:6

Suffering For a Cause

 

Eph 3:1  For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, 

          1.      The Apostle Paul is Suffering for the Church

a.       Paul begins his prayer with some rather upsetting news, so he interrupts his prayer to give the people comfort. He does not get back to the prayer until verse 13 in which we gain some more understanding of what he was beginning to say

                                                              i.      Ephesians 3:13-14 

b.      What Paul is saying is the Church is an honor to suffer for

                                                              i.      Our suffering is inescapable

1.      2 Timothy 3:12 

                                                            ii.      Our suffering advances the gospel

1.      Philippians 1:12 

                                                          iii.      Our suffering enables us to be partakers of Christ’s glory

1.      1 Peter 4:12-14 

          2.      The Apostle Paul is Suffering Because He is a Prisoner of Christ

a.       Suffering for Christ draws us closer to Him

                                                              i.      Philippians 3:10-11 

b.      Suffering for Christ reveals our hidden motives

                                                              i.      1 Peter 2:19-23 

c.       Suffering for Christ will become a joy

                                                              i.      Colossians 1:24 

          3.      The Apostle Paul is Suffering for the Sake of the Gentiles in the Faith

a.       2 Timothy 1:7-12
