Romans 5:6-11

Romans 5:6-11
Christ Died For Sinners

Rom 5:6  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Rom 5:10  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Rom 5:11  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

1.      Paul is Explaining What He Meant in Verse 5. He is Revealing the Source of Power by Which the Christian is Changed into the Likeness of Christ.
a.       Romans 5:5
                                                              i.      It is in the meditation of the grace and love of Christ that a Christian transforms his affections. In order overcome sin one does not simply stop doing bad things. The gospel is not only about behavior modification. It transforms our affections.
1.      The reverse is of true of this passage in 1 John. As you fill your life with the love of the father their will be no more room for a love of the world.
a.       1 John 2:15-17
2.      We Begin to Understand and Fathom the Love of God When We Understand that God Initiated it by Giving Us His Son.
a.       Christ died for you when you were helpless and hopeless – vs. 6*
                                                              i.      Ephesians 2:1-10
b.      God proved his love for you by sending His Son to die on behalf of you, when you were in sin and rebellion – vs. 7-8*
                                                              i.      This is something that no man would do for you. Some men are willing to die for a good man, but no one cares for a worthless rebellious wretch like you and me. Yet God did and He sent His Son to take your place. – vs. 7*
1.      1 John 4:9-10
2.      Isaiah 53:3-6
c.       Christ justified you with His blood so you could be saved from wrath in Him – vs. 9*
                                                              i.      This confidence or assurance is the bases on which we can live a changed life in Christ. Catholic Theologian Robert Bellomine says that the greatest of all protestant heresy is not salvation by grace alone but the assurance of salvation. Thankfully this is not what scripture tells us. This verse very clearly tells us that our justification (and security) has already been purchased through the blood of Christ.
1.      Ephesians 1:11-14
d.      How can you not believe that the God that would die for you when you were His enemy, would not provide for you a new life changed by His grace? – vs. 10*
                                                              i.      Romans 8:10-11
e.       Christ has restored our joy in God because He has made the Atonement for us – vs. 11*
                                                              i.      You cannot learn to love something you fear and hate, and we no longer need to fear God because of the restoration Christ has provided. Knowing God can now bring immense joy that can take over your life and change you from the inside out.
1.      Isaiah 61:10
