Romans 9:14-18

Romans 9:14-18
Is God Unrighteous for Showing Mercy?

Rom 9:14  What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
Rom 9:15  For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Rom 9:16  So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
Rom 9:17  For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
Rom 9:18  Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

  1. Does the Doctrine of Election Mean that God is Unrighteous? – vs. 14a
    1. Is God wicked for choosing some to be saved and choosing others to be dammed?
  2. Absolutely Not! – vs. 14b
    1. Paul’s emphatic exclamation should be enough to answer the skeptic, seeing that there is no unrighteousness with God. Paul could have left it there, but proceeds to give two scriptural citations for the unbelieving heart.
                                                              i.      Romans 9:11
  1. Scriptural proof number 1 – vs. 15
    1. The Apostle Paul sights a reference to the story of Moses after the people had rebelled against God and made a golden calf. Moses then returns to the mountain to intercede on behalf of the people. There is a beautiful exchange between God and Moses on the mountain.
                                                              i.      Exodus 33:17-23
  1. Conclusion – vs. 16
    1. Your salvation does not rest in your decision to follow Christ – “Man has a free will to go to hell, but none to go to heaven” – George Whitefield
                                                              i.      John 1:12-13
                                                            ii.      James 1:18
    1. Your salvation does not rest in your ability to follow Christ
                                                              i.      Hebrews 12:2
    1. Your salvation rests in the mercy and forgiveness of Christ
                                                              i.      Psalm 65:4
  1. Scriptural poof number 2 – vs. 17
    1. The second scriptural proof that Paul sights is a negative example. This one is of Pharaoh, a man that hardened his heart against God. He was used by God to demonstrate the power of God’s judgment.
                                                              i.      Exodus 9:13-17
  1. Conclusion – vs. 18
    1. God demonstrates His mercy on us by softening our hearts to receive His forgiveness and grace.
                                                              i.      Hebrews 3:7-14
    1. God demonstrates His power by hardening the heart of the unbeliever to receive His Judgment.
                                                              i.      Hebrews 3:15-19

A much needed message for our day and time...

Romans 9:13b

Romans 9:13b
Who Does God Hate?

Rom 9:13  As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

1.      What Does Election Teach Us About What God Hates? – “But Esau have I hated”
a.       The foremost objection when faced with a difficult verse like this is: does God actually hate? I thought God was a God of love?
                                                              i.      The answer from scripture is clear, there are things that God does hates. In fact, examining those things sheds light on His nature and character. The following is a list of things that God hates:
1.      False Worship - Deuteronomy 12:31; Amos 5:21-23
2.      Idolatry - Deuteronomy 16:22
3.      Unrighteousness - Proverbs 6:16-19
4.      Pride - Proverbs 8:12-13
5.      Hypocrisy - Isaiah 1:13-15
6.      Wickedness - Psalm 45:7
b.      The second objection to this verse is: Doesn’t the Greek word here mean love less rather such a strong word like hate? After all, doesn’t God love the sinner and the sin.
                                                              i.      Here are four reasons to consider why this Greek word is translated as ‘hate.’
1.      As we saw earlier, God hates things that are contrary to His holy nature.
2.      Sin and the sinner are inseparable
a.       Hebrews 10:26-31
3.      There are numerous references to God hating the sinner
a.       Psalm 5:4-6; Psalm 7:11; Psalm 11:5; John 3:36
4.      If God loved the sinner up to the point of judgment, why does He suddenly change His mind? This would be contrary to His nature.
a.       Daniel 12:2
b.      God does not change His mind, and this truth should give us incredible assurance of His love.
                                                                                                                                      i.      Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8; Philippians 1:6

Romans 9:13a

Romans 9:13a
Whom Does God Love?

Rom 9:13  As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

1.      What is Election?
a.       Election is a demonstration of God’s special saving grace being poured out upon a very undeserving individual like you and me.
                                                              i.      What is the biblical definition of election?
1.      Romans 8:29-30
2.      Is Election Biblical? – “As it is written”
a.       Paul is quoting from the Old Testament in this verse which gives it a double emphasis of being scripture twice over.
                                                              i.      Malachi 1:2-5
3.      What does Election Tell Us About God’s Love? – “Jacob I have loved”
a.       There are two aspects of God’s love that we must examine in the light of this verse in order for us to gain a deeper understanding of what Paul is talking about.
                                                              i.      God’s general love for all mankind – Common Grace
1.      Matthew 5:43-45
2.      Acts 14:17
3.      God even has a love and concern for the animal kingdom as well
a.       Matthew 6:26-32
ii.      God special saving love for the elect – Special or Saving Grace
1.      Romans 9:11
2.      Romans 9:15
3.      Romans 9:18
4.      Ephesians 1:4-5
5.      Colossians 3:12
6.      2 Thessalonians 2:13
b.      Does all this mean that we were saved from the beginning of time and that there is no need for repentance and faith which produces justification?
                                                              i.      Scripture is clear that justification happens at the moment of belief. You were just as much a child of wrath like any other unsaved person before you believed in Jesus.
1.      Ephesians 2:1-4
c.       How do I know if I am elect of God?
                                                              i.      Respond to God’s call by calling upon Jesus for salvation
1.      Romans 10:9-13
