When Worship and the World Collide - John 12:1-11 (September 12, 20201)

Romans 16:1-2

Romans 16:1-2

I Commend unto You Phebe

Rom 16:1  I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:

Rom 16:2  That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.

  1. Paul is Sending Phebe to the Roman Church – vs. 1a*
    1. Phebe was probably a woman of means and influence which gave her the ability to travel as well as financially support missionary efforts
    2. For this reason, Paul is sending her to Rome probably with the book of Romans.
  2. She was a Blessing to the Church in Cenchrea – vs. 1b*
    1. Cenchrea is a port city 6.5 miles from Corinth
    2. Cenchrea was probably a wealthy city
    3. Phebe was known in the area as one that could be a reliable help in the spreading of the gospel.
    4. She may have even hosted the budding church in her own home.
    5. She was a servant of the Church in Cenchrea

                                                              i.      This probably does not mean that she held a formal office of deaconess. One good reason for this is, that there is no other Biblical evidence that such an office existed in the New Testament

1.      Philippians 1:1

2.      1 Timothy 3:11-12

3.      Acts 6:3

                                                            ii.      The kind of servant she was, is an example to all of us, whether you hold an official office or not.

                                                            ii.      This could include

2.      Possibly financial aide

3.      Travel supplies

4.      Maybe travel passes or protection on the road

  1. The Roman Church was to Help Her with Whatever She Needed – vs. 2b*
    1. The support of the Romans church was vital to the success of Phebe’s mission. For their sacrifice they received the precious gift of the book of Romans

                                                              i.      3 John 1:5-8

  1. She Tended to the Needs of Many – vs. 2c*
    1. The Greek word used to describe Phebe’s ministry was that of a Patroness. She was an ardent supporter of the work of her local church. Her ministry could have been something like that of Dorcas.

The God of Peace be with You All

Rom 15:30  Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;

Rom 15:31  That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;

Rom 15:32  That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed.

1.      Acts 21:17-21

c.       He asks for protection in his journey back to Rome – vs. 32

                                                            ii.      Paul did receive the refreshment he longed for in Rome, because of the initiative of believers like Onesiphorus

1.      2 Timothy 1:16-18

d.      His final request is for the Roman Church. He wants them to pray that the God of peace would be with them – vs. 33

                                                              i.      There is peace for all men

Romans 15:22-29

Romans 15:22-29

That I May Be Comforted Together with You

Rom 15:22  For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.

Rom 15:23  But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you;

Rom 15:24  Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company.

Rom 15:25  But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints.

Rom 15:26  For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.

Rom 15:27  It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.

Rom 15:28  When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.

Rom 15:29  And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.
