Romans 6:15-19

Romans 6:15-19
You Have Been Made Free from Sin

Rom 6:15  What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Rom 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 6:17  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Rom 6:19  I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

1.      Is Freedom from the Law a License to Sin? – vs. 15*
a.       Absolutely not! It is through grace and forgiveness that we conquer sin and truly follow the spirit of the law through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
                                                              i.      John 8:36
                                                            ii.      Ezekiel 36:26-27
2.      Christianity is Not Simply Accepting a New Ethic or Morality. It is the Recognition of a New Master. – vs. 16*
a.       The word yield means, prepared to serve. Just like a slave is standing by his master ready at a moment’s notice to serve his master’s every wish. When we were slaves of sin, this described our relationship to it. If sin beckoned, we obeyed it without question or argument. Now that we are in Christ and He is our master we must learn to have the same relationship with Him.
                                                              i.      1 Peter 1:18-25

3.      How Do I Know that Christ is My Master and that I Am No Longer Under Sin’s Brutal Slavery? – vs. 17*
a.       Paul gives us, in a few short sentences, what it means to be a Christian in verse 17.
                                                              i.      A Christian receives the forgiveness and grace of God with thanksgiving
1.      Titus 3:4-7
ii.      A Christian admits that they were once a slave of sin, blindly following its mastery without question.
1.      Romans 3:10-12
iii.      A Christian is submitted to the doctrine of grace, which is redemption and forgiveness of sin through the completed work of Christ on the cross.
1.      Hebrews 9:12-14
4.      Through the Completed Work of Christ, We are Now No Longer Slaves to Sin, but in Fact Slaves to Righteousness. – vs. 18*
a.       Paul is not talking about someday. He is defining your position in Christ NOW.
                                                              i.      Psalm 116:16
                                                            ii.      Psalm 119:32
                                                          iii.      Psalm 119:45
                                                          iv.      John 8:31-32
5.      Paul Purposely Uses the Illustration of a Slave to Show Us the Process of Sanctification and the Work of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives. – vs. 19*
a.       When you were not saved, you sinned because you were a sinner. Just like an apple tree produces apples. Every time you yielded to sin it led to more sin which increased in frequency and magnitude.
                                                              i.      Ephesians 2:2-3
b.      The process of sanctification works very similarly. Now that you are defined by the nature of Christ, all you have to do is yield to Christ and He takes over growing you into the likeness of Himself. Just like sin grows with every act, grace grows the same way. Every time you yield to Christ’s work in your life, your spiritual walk grows in strength and power.
                                                              i.      James 4:5-6
c.       When you choose to yield your body to righteousness, God can begin to build holiness in your life which produces sanctification.
                                                              i.      Colossians 3:9-12

James Usher, John Owen & The Received Text

I really appreciate the work of Robert Truelove. His straight forward honesty is refreshing in the world of textual criticism.

Can we say "Christ died for you" to everyone? (Q&A with John Piper)

A good answer on the subject of limited atonement. His last line is probably the most important. That salvation in it's entirety is a free gift given to you by the sacrifice of Christ, and you can have it by simply believing that it is true of you.

Romans 6:12-14

Romans 6:12-14
Choose Whom You Will Serve This Day

Rom 6:12  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13  Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Rom 6:14  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

  1. Therefore Do Not Let Sin Reign Over You – vs. 12*
    1. Paul wants you to have victory over sin right now, because he adds in the phrase: “In your mortal body.” There is an important distinction here, that you are no longer under the reign of sin, but your body is. Sin does not have a claim over you or define you anymore, but it will fight for mastery over your body. There are consequences to sin, even for a believer. God chastens those He loves, and He will not give up on His work of sanctification in your life no matter how hard you resist it through sin.
                                                              i.      Hebrews 12:5-8
    1. God’s grace will prevail in bringing you to Him, even if that means the destruction of your mortal body.
                                                              i.      1 Corinthians 11:27-30
    1. God’s truth can set you free from the mastery of sin over your body and teach you the ways of freedom in Christ.
                                                              i.      Psalm 119:133
  1. Therefore Do Not Yield Your Body to Sin – vs. 13*
    1. Which Kingdom is your body serving Satan’s or God’s?
                                                              i.      1 Corinthians 6:15-20

    1. We must yield our entire body to the work of grace in our life.
                                                              i.      Romans 12:1
                                                            ii.      Yield your mind
1.      Ephesians 4:23
2.      Philippians 4:8
3.      Romans 8:5
                                                          iii.      Yield your eyes
1.      1 John 2:16
2.      Matthew 5:28-29
                                                          iv.      Yield your tongue
1.      James 3:6
2.      Ephesians 4:29
3.      Psalm 107:2
                                                            v.      Yield your hands
1.      Ephesians 4:28
2.      1 Thessalonians 4:11
                                                          vi.      Yield your feet
1.      Romans 10:15
  1. Therefore Sin Shall Not Be Your Lord or Master – vs. 14*
    1. The law only brings condemnation; only grace can give us the power to overcome sin. Grace will accomplish its work in your life. When you sin, you are only holding up God’s work both in your life and the lives around you. Wouldn’t you want to yield to the will of God and begin working in earnest for the Kingdom that cannot fail?
                                                              i.      Titus 2:13-14

Romans 6:2-7 "What Happened to You?" - 2/1/2018

Thank you so much Dr. Lawson for sharing with this us. It has been very helpful.

Romans 6:3-11

Romans 6:3-11
Have You Left Your First Love?

Rom 6:3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom 6:5  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Rom 6:6  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7  For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:8  Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Rom 6:9  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Rom 6:10  For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Rom 6:11  Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  1. A Believer that has Fallen into Sin Has Forgotten the Love of Christ. He
    1. He has left his first love in order to return his affections to the things of the world.
                                                              i.      Revelation 2:4-5
  1. Have You Forgotten that You Have Been Baptized into Christ? – vs. 3-5
    1. Our water baptism was a symbolic, public declaration of the internal faith that was going on within us. When we get lost in sin, we need to return to the simple childlike faith that motivated us to join a local church and make a public confession of our love for Jesus.
                                                              i.      Paul gives two illustrations to demonstrate his point
1.      We were buried – for you to be free you need to put the past behind you and stop digging up the old, rotting man. Once you bury a body it is never a good idea to dig it up
a.       Colossians 2:12-15
2.      We were planted – When you let go of self and bury him in the ground, God begins a new work within you and a new man in Christ can begin to spring forth. Growth takes time be patient with new believers who are growing and have not yet broken through to visibility yet.
a.       Psalm 92:13
  1. Have You Forgotten that You Have Been Crucified with Christ? – vs. 6-8
    1. Let the old self be crucified with Christ – one that is crucified with Christ no longer serves his own will (or desires) but longs to serve his Savior.
                                                              i.      Luke 9:23-24
    1. Die to sin – this is your old nature that is driven by lust and self-satisfaction.
                                                              i.      Romans 8:12-14
    1. Be set free from sin
                                                              i.      Galatians 2:20
    1. Trust that Christ will make you alive in Him
                                                              i.      Galatians 5:22-26
  1. Have You Forgotten that You Have Been Raised from the Dead in Christ? – vs. 9-11
    1. Christ died for sin once – it is not necessary to sacrifice Christ over and over for sin. He paid for all sin past, present and future in one moment on the cross. Often Christians doubt the sufficiency of Christ work on the cross and they look for ways to pay for it themselves.
                                                              i.      Hebrews 10:12-18
    1. Christ is now seated at the right hand of the Father interceding for you – Christ is not busy paying for each and every new sin that you commit; instead he is involved in a continual work of intercession for the believer.
                                                              i.      Hebrews 1:1-3
    1. Accept that your new nature in Christ is the same. He died once, now He is in glory – The storms of life distract us from the power of God to hold us fast.
                                                              i.      Hebrews 6:17-20
