Roman 8:13

Roman 8:13
Victory in Jesus

Rom 8:13  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

      1.      The Rebellion Against the Slavery of Sin Has Begun. How Do I as a Believer in Christ Overcome Sin?
a.       Up to this point Paul has been emphasizing the truth that man is broken and without hope, apart from Christ. The temptation is to think that this could also be referring to the Christian. While the Christian hopeless without Christ he is not hopeless in Christ. In fact, he is more than a conquer.
                                                                i.      1 John 5:4-5
b.      Because and through the victory given to the believer, the believer is called upon to murder or overpower the deeds of the body. He is not to just sit around waiting for God to do something for him. Rather, he is to actively build habits of spiritual discipline into his life. Today we are going to discuss what scripture tells us those disciplines should be.

     6.      Walk Worthy of the God You Serve
a.       Ephesians 4:1-4
b.      1 Thessalonians 4:1-5
      7.      Work on Your Salvation with a Fear and Reverence to God
a.       Philippians 2:12-13
      8.      Set You Affections on Things Above
a.       Colossians 3:1-10

Romans 8:10-13

Romans 8:10-13
Rise Up, Oh Men of God!

Rom 8:10  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Rom 8:12  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

       1.  If Christ is in You, Then Your Old Nature is Dead and Gone. – vs. 10a
a.       It is not an experience or an epiphany that enables us to overcome sin it is an understanding of the truth of God’s word proclaimed. A Christian that lives in defeat, is a Christian that does not thoroughly understand their position in Christ. A slave that has been emancipated still lives in the fear and oppression they have always known. It would take much convincing through logical argument to awaken him to the truth of his current state. A whole generation of Israelites had to be wiped out to eradicate the slave mentality that they lived in. Be patience with those that still struggle with sin.
                                                              i.      Romans 6:6-8
      2.      The Spirit that Now Dwells Within Us Produces Life and the Liberty of Righteousness. – vs. 10b
a.       1 Corinthians 6:19-20
      3.      Why Do We Wondering If the Holy Spirit Would have the Power to Overcome Our Sin, When He was the One that Raised Up Christ from the Dead? – vs. 11
a.       You have a new power that now resides in you, enabling you to conquer sin. This the power that Jesus illustrates to us through the example of the vine in John 15.
                                                              i.      John 14:15-21
                                                            ii.      John 15:1-4
      4.      Because of the Victory Won for Us by Christ on the Cross and the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit; We are No Longer Enslaved by Our Old Sin Nature. – vs. 12
a.       You were once dead to Christ in your sin. But the preaching of the word of God and work of the Holy Spirit makes you alive ready to serve our God.
                                                              i.      Ezekiel 37:1-14
      5.      Those that Live in the Power of Flesh Will Perish. – vs. 13a
a.       Romans 6:23
      6.      Those that Join the Uprising Against the Flesh and Walk in the Power of the Holy Spirit Will Live. – vs. 13b
a.       There is a movement afoot, rise up and murder the old fleshly nature and live free in Christ. You are now able to actively conquer the flesh, and there is no more need to fear. We can rise up and conquer Canaan in the might of our God!
                                                              i.      Galatians 5:24-25
