Men's Retreat

Hey all just wanted to pass on to you a wonderful article written by Roy Stewart one of our church members and attenders of the retreat. I would tell you all about it except that I think that Roy does a much better job. Here you are I think you will enjoy.

"Seven Enjoy Religious Retreat in Mendocino Forest"

"Into the forest rode the seven men to attend the first-ever men’s retreat feted by the Stonyford Community Church. In an event conceived, organized, and managed by Pastor Kevin Weston, the retreat was held at a cabin in the Mendocino National Forest.

"At 10 a.m., on Friday, November 8, 2013, the seven men, in three pick-up trucks laden with firewood, food, and hymnals converged on the cabin for twenty-six hours of fellowship and study. Six of the men were Stonyfordians, headed by Pastor Kevin and including Frank Pendell, Frank Elliott, Paul Crabtree, Russ Coughran, and Roy Stewart. The seventh, Richard Knight, is from Elk Creek. The highlights of the retreat were twofold: First, were the conversations as they sat around a warm stove and got to know each other better. Second, was the entertaining enlightenment that was experienced through listening to renowned preachers sharing thought-provoking stories from their life and their missionary work. And also through the sobering slide-show commentary by Pastor Kevin on topics that included marriage, work, and the discipline needed to live a Christian lifestyle.

"The morning we headed into the forest high country was sunny and cool—perfect weather for our upcoming adventure. Upon arrival, the cabin was chilly, but the small wood-burning stove quickly warmed it up. The now-warm 600 square foot cabin proved perfect for our retreat. It was cozy and its main room was a near-
perfect conversation pit containing two three-cushion couches, two reclining-chairs, and a coffee table. After making ourselves comfortable, Kevin opened with a prayer, Paul shared a devotional message, and then we broke for a lunch of homemade chili. After lunch, Paul cranked up the generator so Kevin could show an inspirational message by Dr. David Gibbs. Dr. Gibbs is a lawyer and president of the Christian Law Association. He is an entertaining speaker who related stories about his grandfather, Earl Gibbs. Grandfather Earl was a self-made man. His formal education had stopped at the fifth grade, but his native intelligence and trust in God made him successful in life. He was a butcher who parlayed the butchering and selling of one steer into ten steers and then hundreds and thousands . In one humorous anecdote, Dr. Gibbs said that his grandfather always began his prayers by telling God his name. He would say, “Heavenly father this is Earl . . . .”He also said that he prayed often and credited God with whatever success he had made in his life. Theirs was a loving relationship, and Dr. Gibbs made that fact abundantly clear. We all enjoyed his talk so much, that we asked Kevin if he had any others. He had one more, and he shared it with us a few hours later.

"David Gibbs was a hard act to follow, but Kevin rose to the occasion. While his computer was still hot, he used it to present a Power-Point presentation emphasizing the importance of having God in our family, home, and work lives. Using quotes from the Scripture, allied with appropriate images, and with calls for discussion during and following each topic, he kept us interested and focused during his hour-long slideshow.

"After all this food for the soul, it was time to feed the body. Kevin, Paul and Frank Elliott broke out the barbeque grill and put on the hamburgers. Dinner was hamburgers, left-over chili, and a tempting variety of chips and dips. Along with dinner came much interesting conversation. All of us had fascinating tidbits to share from our childhood and on up to our present lives. Three of us had been in the military and shared experiences gained from far off places in Iceland, Europe and Asia. Others shared growing-up experiences in nearby places, such as Yuba City, Sacramento, Stonyford, and Glenn County. The conversation flowed so evenly that it was a while before there was a pause. When the pause occurred, Kevin stepped into the breach so ask if we were ready for another slideshow. We were. Kevin’s second Power-Point presentation was A Call to Action a motivation to the Modern Christian Man.

"The sun had long disappeared and bedtime had drawn nigh. The challenge now was where each of us was to bunk. It was surprisingly easy. Kevin spread a cushion on the main-room floor, Ross and Richard each took a couch, Frank Pendell setup a cot in the kitchen, Frank Elliott spread his sleeping bag in the loft, Roy took the bed in the loft, and Paul slept in his truck. And, also surprisingly, for six men sleeping in a barracks-like environment, the night passed quietly—no one snored.

"The morning broke clear and cold, with an ambient temperature in the 30s. The outside temperature was of no consequence—except, perhaps, to Paul—because the cabin was warm. Ross had kept the fire going throughout the night, and the window in the stove showed a bright orange. When our individual getting-up
were behind us, we were ready for breakfast. As a young man, Kevin had worked for the Cracker Barrel chain, so he appointed himself chief cook and bottle washer. It was a apt appointment. He stirred up a hearty meal of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Had they known, the Cracker Barrel would have been proud.

"Following breakfast, Kevin again took the floor with another spiritually laden lecture-and-slideshow . Next,
he posed the question to Paul to tell us something about his life that we did not know. When Paul finished, others continued until we had all had a say. It was a very interesting hour or so. When the talk petered out around eleven, Kevin suggested a last hour-long lecture by Otto Koning, a Dutch missionary in Indonesia. He regaled us with several stories about preaching the gospel to demon-believing warrior tribes in the New Guinea jungle. His dead-panned humor coupled with his delightful Dutch accent had us all laughing. While funny, his stories all contained deadly serious conclusions about God and His power to defeat Satan.

"The Dutchman left us with a smile and the noon hour told us it was time to clean-up and go home. With all sharing the load, repacking the trucks and cleaning and securing the cabin was quickly accomplished. By one o’clock we were headed back down the mountain and home. A good time was had by all, and we all
agreed that Retreats like this could become tradition."

Some Thoughts on Government

In light of the recent happening of our government and the absolute incompetency verses like these ones start to make more sense. Certainly it is true that government cannot save you only God can and it is to Him that we must look.

"Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts."

                                                                                            -  Ps. 119:133-134

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

                                                                                                        - C.S. Lewis

My First Baptism

The Lord has been really blessing lately as we have seen a couple of conversions and a wonderful baptismal service. 6 people were baptized on the 25th. It was a wonderful service and I had the former pastor come back and preform several of the baptisms because so much of what we saw that day was because of his hard work. But I did get to baptize one faithful believer who is growing in Christ in such a beautiful way. Please continue to pray for us as we labor here in the field. The Lord is really blessing and we are seeing wonderful changes in so many lives. We are also blessed with a wonderful support group, there are many mature believers in our church that are a huge part of what we do. For example Richard Knight, who we just appointed as Director of Evangelism, has had a huge impact as he and I have been doing a lot of visitation and meeting various people in the community. Because Richard knows so many people in community he is able to get into places that would be completely impossible otherwise. Thank God for His wondrous mercy, we give Him all the credit.

Below are a few pics from the Baptism:

Happy Fourth of July

Dear Reader,
In the midst of all the BBQing and having fun at the local lake take a moment to remember that freedom is not free or thanks some one how has fought to keep us free. Thank God a few man felt that it was worth risking their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to start this free Republic that we live in. This anecdote of Benjamin Franklin says it well. This is quote from Bartletby.com.

McHenry’s notes were first published in The American Historical Review, vol. 11, 1906, and the anecdote on p. 618 reads:

“A lady asked Dr. Franklin Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy. A republic replied the Doctor if you can keep it.”

Evil is always coming us with some sort of 'ism', and that is why the fight to keep our children free is ever going on. Thank God for the past generations that did it for us. God bless the Republic.

Dear Reader,
I wanted to mention this again as I have been getting some positive feed back from you all about this. Thank you so much for you support, prayers and encouragement. I wanted to give a special thanks to Roy Stewart our video guy at our church who has been faithfully recording this messages and posting them online. He plans to keep going even though we have taken a short break for the past few weeks. You should find the next installment of the Gospel of John here on our community webpage. Roy Stewart also manages this website and you will find a number of interesting tidbits about our town and church on this site.

Duggar Haters

Dear Reader,
I came across this article dealing with some of the Duggar hate. This is one of the things that I do not understand. I completely understand that you may feel that you are not cut out to have 20 children and that is completely fine but why do so many have to say such things about people who have a sincere heart. Unlike most of the Dugger haters out there I have personally met the Duggars and spent significant time with them. I have in all my dealing with them found them extremely honest and sincere in their love for life. Certainly that is what they are, in a culture that is moving faster and faster down the road towards a hate for human life, the Duggars are a shinning tower of Christian love and hope. Those that are the followers of Satan will naturally be trained to like him hate life but for those of us that claim to be followers of Christ we should always love life. Because Christ loved life and gave His life for our broken, blind and filthy life. Because He didn't see you and me in our broken form but what He could recreate us to be.

"If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you." — John 15:18

The O'Keeffes in Ireland

Dear Reader,
While we have been so excited to have the opportunity to serve here in Stonyford CA our prayers and thoughts are still with those serving on the front lines in the nation of Ireland. The O'Keeffe family are one of many nationals and missionaries serving over there and they need your prayers. Ireland is facing a lot of pivotal issues right now and there is no time like the present to preach the gospel like never before. The O'Keeffes are doing just that. They have started a bible study with the help of their sending church Bible Baptist Church of Ballincollig, and they are have taken that to they next step and started a church. It is amazing to watch the Lord's blessing as they toil hard in His fields. They very much need your prayer and financial support. Please go to their awesome website and see what an amazing work they are doing. Here is their website. Check it out and get involved. Please contact them for further information about what they are doing and how you can get involved.

Preach [Theology Meets Practice]

I am currently reading a good book that was given to me by my mentor. The title is, "Preach [Theology Meets Practice]," by Mark Dever and Gregg Gilbert. So far, it has been a great and easy read, it also makes some great points. In a day and time where preaching is often sidelined, this book is a tall glass of water on a hot day. Preaching is not only an effective way of communicating the truth of God's word, it is one of the main ways that God wants His truth communicated. From the very foundations of the church, preaching has been there right at the heart of the matter. In the book of Acts you see the Apostles preaching over and over again. Often true preaching is accompanied by revival, and that is what makes it especially relevant today.

One of the things that we, as preachers, can get caught up in is preaching to reinforce the culture. While there may be many positive things in our culture, it, like any other culture, has things in direct opposition to the word of God. Some times we can get caught up in the business of tickling ears instead of pricking hearts. In the book the author mentions an interesting quote from an article by Bill McKibbens:

"The pastors focus relentlessly on you and your individual needs. Their goal is to service consumers - not communities but individuals: 'seekers' is the term of art, people who feel the need for some spirituality in their (or children's) lives but who aren't tightly bound to any particular denomination or school of thought. The result is often a kind of soft-focus, comfortable suburban faith. A New York Times reporter visiting one booming mega church outside of Phoenix recently found the typical scene: a drive through latte stand, Krispy Kreme doughnuts at every service, and sermons about 'How to discipline your children, how to reach your professional goals, how to invest your money, how to reduce your dept'. On Sundays children played with church-distributed Xboxes, and many congregants had signed up for a twice-weekly aerobics class called Firm Believers."

Maybe your church is not quite in touch with the culture as this previously mentioned church (and I mean that in a positive way), but you still get caught up in preaching the popcorn of your own subculture. Truth be told, most of us pastors, whether we would like to admit it or not, are not really in touch with the direction that our mainstream culture is going. Our culture is moving farther and faster away from Biblical truth, and being in touch with it is really being in touch with evil. Unfortunately; though, we do get caught up in preaching what is popular in our circles. It is all too easy to get stuck on some hobby horse or talk about some other church out there and the terrible things that they are doing. We are preaching everything except what our church desperately needs: how this passage should change their lives forever. Admit it, it is much easier to deal with the sins of the big mega church down the road than to deal with the struggles of your congregation. Most likely the reason is because it is always easier to deal with someone else's problem than my own. Jesus said it well when He said, "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye" (Matt 7:1-5).

Preaching shouldn't be culturally relevant but relevant to your congregation. You dealing with the sins of pop culture is like leading you congregation to water but not letting them drink. There is a desperate need in our day to show people how the Word of God should change the everyday lives of the people. God wants to use His word to invade every area of the lives of your congregants. Don't stand in the way of that.

Some Thoughts on John 1:1-2

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God."

                                                                                              John 1:1-2

In these first two verses we have the introduction of the gospel of John. Wow, what powerful verses we have here as well. On these thoughts hang the truth of Christianity. John is normally a rather flowery guy when it comes to written language, but here he is blatantly clear. John usually is very poetical, expressing things in a very educated Greek. Here though he does not want you to miss his point because the rest of gospel he is going to be demonstrating what he is saying in these first two verses over and over again. John's gospel is very different from the others, because like the others he chooses stories and words of Christ that demonstrate that Christ is who He says He is, the Son of God. This verse is so clear that you might as well rip it out if you do not agree with it. Because John has no intention of letting you miss the point of what he is saying.

I am currently preparing to preach through the gospel of John and I am excited about this passage because it is the perfect introduction for the book. Other gospels start out with Christ's human genealogies but John starts out with showing that Christ is not a created being. He is God and He was with God in the beginning. While there are those that flatly deny the deity of Christ, of which I sincerely doubt I will change their minds, there are many of us who would confess the deity of Jesus but not live like we do. Some times in our day and times we over emphasize the humanness of Christ. We want to make Him some sort of genie/buddy that should always deliver happiness to us in whatever form we desire. I like C.S. Lewis' example of the fact that He is not a tame lion. While Christ does love us and want to give us what is best for us He does not fit into the bottle of personal desires. So often we what to shrink the God Jesus down to a more manageable size. Christ is bigger than our logic and our thoughts and that is why He says:

"For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

                                                                                            Is 55:9

Some Thoughts on Preparing for a Mother's Day Sermon

On thing for sure is that you are not going to get a how to from me as I am doing this for the first time. I am always excited about my sermon for Sunday and the preparation for it but I have to admit that I am pretty green at this thing. While there are a lot of nice things to say about mothers both past and present one thing for sure is that God loves the heart of a mother. He created and instilled in a woman that deep desire and instinct to mother. In this instinct He has left images of his character. As a mother holds her baby for the first time there is absolute love in her eyes. She has spent the last nine month giving of her body to grow this little life. She has also, though the little bumps and taps in her womb, began to develop a relationship with this budding human being. As she loves the little child she loves him without any expectancy of return on investment. There is nothing that this little baby can do for her. He cannot give her money or things he can hardly express his feelings, but none the less she is eager and willing to pour our her life for the being she holds in her arms. Such it is with the heart of Christ. We are barely able to respond in our relationship with Him. Our love is purely a response to the love he pours out on us. We are only able to reciprocate His feelings toward us, and certainly He has no need for us. Yet he says things like this about us.

"The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee."

                                                                                                                  Jer 31:3

The reality is that the love of a mother is truly overwhelming. Yet at the same time the love of our Lord is that much more overwhelming. This Sunday take some time to thank some mothers for their example and love. Especially yours because after all you would not be here if it was not for her. From me to all your mothers out there, God bless you. May you keep doing what you do best. Thank you so much for teaching us a little bit about what it means to lay down your life for another.

Political Views

Dear Reader,
Thank you so much for your support and interest lately and I am aware that there are probably some of you that are just starting to follow my blog now that I am now the pastor of  Stonyford Community Church. You may have noticed that I have been rather liberal in expressing my conservative views on this blog. I hope that you do not find any of this offensive as I have thought long and hard about my views and do not take them lightly. Although I do understand that there are those of you out there that hold differing opinions that you hold just as dear. Let me say here and now that it is perfectly fine with me (although I might hope that you might change over to my viewpoint :) ). I am always happy to discuss with any one concerned about what I have posted on these pages and I am fully aware of the fact that I may have easily missed something that could clarify my views. I would also be happy if you express that to me through the internet or in person. What I hope to do here is have a form of my learning. A place to express tough ideas and concepts that I believe no one on earth has the complete answer to. You may notice that I come across strong in my presentation but my intention is not to offend but simply to dialog. I firmly believe that we cannot strengthen our beliefs until we can discuss them with friends and sometimes enemies to round out the finer points. All of us have something to learn and I put my name at the top of that list but learning is not possible until we get out there and study and discuss the questions of life. The stagnant society is the one that does not allow discussion, prohibits books and learning and bans the congregation of people. In the words of Heinrich Hein a German Jewish poet "Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings." Evil is not interested in hearing the viewpoint of the opposing side, and truth does not fear scrutiny.

First Days as a Pastor at Stonyford Community Church

Wow what an exciting time unloading the trailers unpacking the office and especially the books. We have had a very warm welcome here in Stonyford as the people here have poured out the love of Christ on us. We have been so blessed meeting all the new people that go to our church and some that do not go to our church but are vital parts of this community. I have to say a hearty thank you to you all that live here in Stonyford for your gracious welcome.

Stonyford is a beautiful community here about two and half hours drive northwest of Sacramento California. While driving back out here the words to that old song kept going through my head.

California here I come
Right back where I started from

God has certainly blessed and we are so excited about serving here in Stonyford and seeing the amazing things that God is going to do. We are so glad for the faithful that have been serving here for so long helping to put us in a starting place we could have never dreamed of. While there are many here in Stonyford that are faithful servants of the Lord there is much work to be done and we covet your prayers as for us and those that we are serving beside in the Lord's work.

We had a great men's Bible study last night as we are studying through Matt chapter five. There was a some great discussion and some wonderful thoughts on such a key passage of scripture. My first sermon is Mother's day on the 12th so you can be praying for me as I prepare for that. God bless you all.

The Joining of Village Missions

It has been a little while since you have heard from me but I wanted to update our status with Village missions. We have been officially accepted by Village Missions and I will soon be placed in a church serving as a Village Missions pastor. It is hard to believe that soon I will be serving in such a capacity. I am overwhelmed at the awesome responsibility that such a position holds. It will be a blessing at times and there will of course be times that I feel like giving up. The important thing to remember is Christ is going to have to be my strength, no matter how qualified or unqualified I may feel. I will fail but Christ will not fail me. Tonight or maybe later this weekend we should be finding our where we are to be located which means that it will be rather soon that I am placed.

I am thinking over ideas for my first Sunday School class, sermon and prayer-meeting messages. Village Missions stresses the importance of being out in the community spending time with people in order to minister to them but it is just as important that we spend time digging into God's Word so we can present the Truth. Feel free in the comments section to put down some suggestions for passages or resources. I would love to hear from you on this.

Getting Ready for Another Candidate Orientation

Next week we will be leaving for a week long orientation with Village Missions. It has been a shift in our mission purpose that is for sure. As many of you know we have been preparing to go to Ireland for some time now and now we are signing up for a mission agency that supplies full time pastors to churches in rural America. You might be wondering why the change. Well there is a lot of reasons but of course the first one is the Lord impressing on us His direction to pursue this at this time. After praying about this seriously with our church family at Warner Ave Baptist Church we really feel like the Lord is leading us in this direction at least for now. Naturally we are committing to this indefinitely and we see ourselves committing our lives to this work as the Lord leads. Of course this change does not mean that we no longer have a heart for Ireland or that the need there is some how diminished because we are not going there. Quite the opposite the need is still great there and we pray earnestly for a our friends who are serving there on the front lines. Please let me know if you would like further information about people that are serving there or if you would like to know about those that could use your financial support.

As for us now we will be moving towards servng with Village Missions. Please pray that all will go well as we attended orientation next week. Help us to have a servant's heart and a willingness to learn. Thank you all so much for your prayers and support as we have been going through this transition. Pray for us as we continue to seek the Lord for His continued direction.

Some More Thoughts on Gun Control

This gentleman understands the real issue. It is not about guns it is about the fact that our nation has turned its back against God. There is no way any of us could say this better.

COLUMBINE STUDENT'S FATHER 12 YEARS LATER!!

Guess our national leaders didn't expect this. On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.
They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness. The following is a portion of the transcript:

"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good &evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.
"The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart.
"In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent
I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy -- it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact.
What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs -- politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws.
Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him.

To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA -- I give to you a sincere challenge.. Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone!
My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"
- Darrell Scott

Gun Control

I am sure there are some in my audience that are just sick and tired of the whole gun debate that is going on. Maybe you are wondering what is the importance of all this discussion. What is the point that we argue so relentlessly for a few features on our guns? Certainly if that was all there was to this you would not hear too much from me. After all there are much more important issues facing our nation such as the destruction of the unborn and the rejection of godliness that is becoming so universal. But it is exactly all those things that we need to make an argument on this seemingly small issue. As our government becomes more and more anti- God and sees less and less the value of human rights. As they continue target the helpless and exploit those that cannot speak for themselves I think it is imperative that we speak out on all these issues. In the words of Edmund Burke: "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing". It is our duty as Christian men to protect our families and those that cannot defend themselves. What are you going to do when the some come to collect your children for reeducation or want to euthanize your parents because they are a burden on the health system? Evil is always progressing and your children will ask you what you did to defend their rights back when we could. Below are some thoughts from a respected friend to another friend on our current gun debate.

"Dear Concerned Friend,

"Thank you for expressing your views.  I think its important that we talk through and have firm opinions on this subject, I think its an important one.  I do have to respectfully disagree [with your thoughts].

"As far as the NRA being militant, I have not personally heard of anything that concerns me.  I am a member and supporter of the NRA.  If you have some things that bother you I would like to hear them.  I am sure they are not a prefect organization but they have been the only thing standing in the gap here in CA.  There was a recent law introduced that would effectively eliminate recreational shooting.  It that passed ammunition would only be legal if bought within the state and serialized which would have raised ammo prices to astronomical levels.

"There has been many many lies over the years about what the second amendment actually means I could go into a lot of detail on this but some research into what the founders actually intended will help much with that.

"But I will say that the first part of the amendment is the key.  "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state..."  The debate is not about whether or not we should have guns for recreation.  The intent of the second amendment is to arm every single citizen in this great country with the most deadly small arm available at that time.  Thus making America the most feared and powerful nation in the world.  We defeated the most powerful military machine simply because the everyday citizen had a weapon.  Our government was not capable of issuing nearly enough weapons to form an army.  So I think the founders realized that we owe our freedom from a tyrannical Great Britain because of those muskets hanging on the wall and the bravery of the men who stood in the gap.  It is the same today, freedom is still on the line as it was then.

"I think we need to remember what stopped the shooting in that elementary school.  It was the sight of two men carrying weapons.  The murderer saw two police officers and went and killed himself.  We need more good men with weapons, not less.

"I would enjoy more discussion on this topic.  As you can probably tell its something I care about.

God bless."

William Wilberforce

William Wilberforce

A Christian Man of Action

William Wilberforce was born into a wealthy family of privilege. If there was anyone that could have sat back to soak it all in it was him. Also he was one of continual bad health and he could have easily used that as an excuse to evade his Christian duty. Although having every earthly privilege to enjoy, Wilberforce chose not to keep it all for himself, but to lay down his life in the cause of the weak and defenseless.

William Wilberforce came into politics at an early age, and at first did much to simply serve himself. His family had done everything they could to keep him from the true Christian movement at the time which was the Methodists. They strongly felt that true born again Christianity would ruin this rising political star. In spite of all his family’s efforts Wilberforce came in contact with Isaac Milner. Wilberforce had lots of questions for Isaac Milner who was an evangelical Christian. Milner became Wilberforce’s traveling companion and they had many discussions as they traveled across the continent. Wilberforce was impressed and slowly began to see that he as lacking something in his faith.

There was not any instant change for Wilberforce but as he learned more and accepted more for himself personally, the changes became evident. Later he wrote “Expect to hear myself now universally given out to be a Methodist, may God grant that it may be said with truth.” After committing his life to Christ there was no turning back. Wilberforce wanted to go whole heartedly into the ministry. He even wanted to give up politics completely and be a minister, but God had other plans. He was convinced by a childhood mentor John Newton to stay in politics and fight for the cause of the oppressed. That he did. Around that time he wrote in his journal: “God Almighty has set before me two great objects, the suppression of the slave trade and the reformation of manners.” The reformation of manners was referring to the reforming of society and its evils at that time.
The work for Wilberforce on abolishing the slave trade took the majority of his life. He never saw the complete emancipation of all slaves, even though he did a majority of the work for that to happen. He did see the end of the slave trade which stopped the exportation of thousands into slavery. Even though abolishing the slave trade was a great achievement that require much of him, it was in truth one of the many accomplishments of William Wilberforce. He fought the East India Company to open the door for missionaries to go to India. As well as seeing to the end of such cruel traditions such as Suttee (the burning of a widow with her deceased husband) and female infanticide. He also did much to improve the conditions of the poor in England, who were suffering greatly at that time.

It did not matter whether one was black or white, male or female, young or old if you were downtrodden Wilberforce was there to fight for you. Wilberforce was not just a Christian in name only, but he was a Christian man of action. He truly believed and lived the words of Christ when he said in Matthew 10:8: Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.”  Wilberforce was a man of God and the champion of the lost causes of this world. He truly walked in the steps of his Savior who said of his ministry, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”

These are some of the thoughts I had after reading the tremendous book “Amazing Grace” by Eric Metaxas. I heartily recommend this book as a great read and study into the amazing life of William Wilberforce. Eric Metaxas does a phenomenal job in his representation of Wilberforce’s life and times.

My Letter to the President

The following I sent to the President in light of recent events in our country.

Dear Mr. President,
I am sorry to say that I have been some what disappointed, to say the least, as to the direction that this nation is heading and wanton lack of responsibility of our nation’s leaders on both sides of the isle. Their response to this nation’s debt crisis is certainly deplorable. I would be in jail if I managed my personal finances like the government has our nation’s finances.
Unfortunately that is not my greatest concern. My greatest concern is the loss of this nation’s love for life and the lack of protection for the sanctity of it. It is a tragedy how we have continued to slaughter the next generation in the form of aborting our unborn children. If the White House truly did love life they would be willing to protect all Americans from conception to the point of death. I want to see the abolition of human abortion and the end of this massacre of the innocent. How do we know that we have not killed the people that could be helping us make a difference with this nation’s greatest problems by aborting them? Just as there was judgment for those who did not protect the lives of the Jews in Nazi Germany when they had the opportunity there will be the same for those who turn their backs on the unborn Americans of the future. It is your duty to punish the evil and reward the good. Do not be one of those who refuse to hear the silent cry of the murdered innocent.
Furthermore the second amendment is the average citizen’s right to protect himself from whatever may threaten him or those he loves. When you take that away you only take it away from the law-abiding. Criminals and tyrants will always have the guns they need to kill and oppress. Please enforce the laws we already have on this subject not make new ones that will only punish the good. Why won’t you trust us enough to be able to have what we need to maintain our freedom and protect that which we hold dear to us?

                                                            Sincerely,
                                                                        Kevin Weston
