Acts 3:1-11

But Such as I Have I Give Thee

 

Act 3:1  Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. 

Act 3:2  And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 

Act 3:3  Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. 

Act 3:4  And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. 

Act 3:5  And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. 

Act 3:6  Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 

Act 3:7  And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 

Act 3:8  And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. 

Act 3:9  And all the people saw him walking and praising God: 

Act 3:10  And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.

Act 3:11  And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. 

         1.      A Chance Encounter – vs. 1-4

a.       Peter and John are going about their regular habits of prayer – vs. 1

                                                              i.      It was customary for Jews to pray

1.      The 3rd hour – 9AM; the 6th hour- 12PM; and the 9th hour – 3PM

                                                            ii.      Peter and John were the dynamic duo

1.      They were fishing partners

a.       Luke 5:10-11

2.      They were part of the inner circle

a.       Matthew 17:1 

3.      They would later stand together in defiance of the corrupt Jewish system

a.       Acts 4:19-21 

b.      The lame man is there for totally different reasons – vs. 2

                                                              i.      They were there to worship - he was there for money

                                                            ii.      They were active all their lives – he had to be carried  

                                                          iii.      They were moving – he was immobile

c.       Peter asks for his full attention – vs. 3-4

                                                              i.      “Look on us”

         2.      An Unexpected Gift – vs. 5-7

a.       The lame man was looking for a temporary remedy and was totally unprepared for an eternal one – vs 5

                                                              i.      The eternal remedy was a miracle that changed the course of his life

1.      He was chosen by God

2.      He was healed in the name of Jesus – vs. 6a

a.       Acts 3:12-15 

3.      He as healed by the will of Jesus – vs. 6b

a.       James 5:14-16 

4.      He was healed instantly – vs. 7a

a.       Romans 5:1-2 

5.      He was healed thoroughly – vs. 7b

a.       Hebrews 7:25 

        3.      An Impromptu Worship Service – vs. 8-11

a.       True worship involves joy – vs. 8

                                                              i.      1 Peter 1:8 

b.      True worship is contagious – vs. 9

                                                              i.      Isaiah 35:4-6 

c.       True worship involves amazement – vs. 10

                                                              i.      Acts 4:16-17 

d.      True worship draws people in – vs 11

Acts 2:39-47

The Bride of Christ

 

Act 2:39  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 

Act 2:40  And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 

Act 2:41  Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 

Act 2:42  And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 

Act 2:43  And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 

Act 2:44  And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 

Act 2:45  And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 

Act 2:46  And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 

Act 2:47  Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. 

 

          1.      The Church is Made up of Those that Call Upon the Name of the Lord – vs. 39

a.       While it is God that calls us to Himself, He offers salvation to all those that call on His name. Therefore, the gospel must be preached.

                                                              i.      Romans 10:13-15 

           2.      The Church is Made up of Those that have been Preserved from the Judgement of this                                Generation – vs. 40

a.       There is a coming judgment for all those who do not repent

                                                              i.      Colossians 1:13-14 

          3.      The Church is Made up of Those that have made a Public Declaration of their Faith Through                     Baptism – vs. 41

a.       There are two simple things that happen to necessitate the joining of the church

                                                              i.      Receive the Word with gladness

1.      1 Thessalonians 1:6 

                                                            ii.      Be baptized

1.      Romans 6:3-4 

         4.      The Church is Made up of Those that Long to Fellowship Rightly with Other Believers – vs. 42

a.       They Continued Steadfastly in:

                                                              i.      John 8:31-32 

                                                            ii.      Hebrews 10:39 

b.      Apostles Doctrine

                                                              i.      Ephesians 2:19-20 

c.       Fellowship

                                                              i.      Hebrews 10:25 

                                                            ii.      1 John 1:7 

d.      The Lord’s Supper

                                                              i.      1 Corinthians 11:2 

                                                            ii.      1 Corinthians 11:23-25 

e.       Worship or prayer

                                                              i.      Ephesians 6:18 

         5.      The Church is Made up of Those Who have an Awe of God – vs. 43

a.       Acts 19:13-18 

         6.      The Church is Made up of Those that have a Genuine Love for their Brothers and Sisters in                        Christ  – vs. 44-45

a.       1 John 3:14 

b.      This is not about communism as Jim Jones tried to say

                                                              i.      Proverbs 1:10-15

         7.      The Church is Made up of Those that are Filled with Joy – vs. 46

a.       The reality is that they could not be stopped from worshipping God. They did it everywhere they could in every from.

                                                              i.      They worshipped in the temple

1.      Acts 21:26-30 

                                                            ii.      They worshipped in their houses

1.      Psalm 128:3-4 

                                                          iii.      They worshipped over meals

1.      1 John 1:3 

         8.      The Church is Made up of Those that are Filled with Praise – vs. 47

a.       When God’s people publicly praise Him two things are produced

                                                              i.      They gain favor with all people

1.      Psalm 126:1-3 

                                                            ii.      People are drawn into their number

1.      Psalm 47:1-3

Repent and Be Baptized

 

Act 2:37  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 

Act 2:38  Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 

 

         1.      The Conviction

a.       They heard

                                                              i.      The word of God must be proclaimed for faith to be given by the work of the Holy Spirit

1.      Romans 10:17 

                                                            ii.      The proclamation of the gospel is not accomplished by human ability

1.      1 Corinthians 2:1-5 

b.      They felt conviction

                                                              i.      Conviction comes from a proper understanding of the crime committed

1.      Acts 2:36 

                                                            ii.      Conviction reveals the contents of the heart

1.      Hebrews 4:12-13

                                                          iii.      Conviction changes the way we treat others

1.      John 8:9 

                                                          iv.      Conviction can produce a different response than Peter had that day

        2.      The Call

a.       The call produces repentance

                                                              i.      Matthew 4:17 

                                                            ii.      Acts 3:19 

b.      The call produces obedience

                                                              i.      Romans 8:28-29 

c.       The call produces faith

                                                              i.      Romans 8:30 

d.      The call produces payment for the guilt of sin

                                                              i.      Ephesians 2:1-5 

e.       The call produces the gift of the Holy Spirit

                                                               i.      Ezekiel 36:25-27
