Romans 6:15-19

Romans 6:15-19
You Have Been Made Free from Sin

Rom 6:15  What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Rom 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 6:17  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Rom 6:19  I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

1.      Is Freedom from the Law a License to Sin? – vs. 15*
a.       Absolutely not! It is through grace and forgiveness that we conquer sin and truly follow the spirit of the law through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
                                                              i.      John 8:36
                                                            ii.      Ezekiel 36:26-27
2.      Christianity is Not Simply Accepting a New Ethic or Morality. It is the Recognition of a New Master. – vs. 16*
a.       The word yield means, prepared to serve. Just like a slave is standing by his master ready at a moment’s notice to serve his master’s every wish. When we were slaves of sin, this described our relationship to it. If sin beckoned, we obeyed it without question or argument. Now that we are in Christ and He is our master we must learn to have the same relationship with Him.
                                                              i.      1 Peter 1:18-25

3.      How Do I Know that Christ is My Master and that I Am No Longer Under Sin’s Brutal Slavery? – vs. 17*
a.       Paul gives us, in a few short sentences, what it means to be a Christian in verse 17.
                                                              i.      A Christian receives the forgiveness and grace of God with thanksgiving
1.      Titus 3:4-7
ii.      A Christian admits that they were once a slave of sin, blindly following its mastery without question.
1.      Romans 3:10-12
iii.      A Christian is submitted to the doctrine of grace, which is redemption and forgiveness of sin through the completed work of Christ on the cross.
1.      Hebrews 9:12-14
4.      Through the Completed Work of Christ, We are Now No Longer Slaves to Sin, but in Fact Slaves to Righteousness. – vs. 18*
a.       Paul is not talking about someday. He is defining your position in Christ NOW.
                                                              i.      Psalm 116:16
                                                            ii.      Psalm 119:32
                                                          iii.      Psalm 119:45
                                                          iv.      John 8:31-32
5.      Paul Purposely Uses the Illustration of a Slave to Show Us the Process of Sanctification and the Work of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives. – vs. 19*
a.       When you were not saved, you sinned because you were a sinner. Just like an apple tree produces apples. Every time you yielded to sin it led to more sin which increased in frequency and magnitude.
                                                              i.      Ephesians 2:2-3
b.      The process of sanctification works very similarly. Now that you are defined by the nature of Christ, all you have to do is yield to Christ and He takes over growing you into the likeness of Himself. Just like sin grows with every act, grace grows the same way. Every time you yield to Christ’s work in your life, your spiritual walk grows in strength and power.
                                                              i.      James 4:5-6
c.       When you choose to yield your body to righteousness, God can begin to build holiness in your life which produces sanctification.
                                                              i.      Colossians 3:9-12

James Usher, John Owen & The Received Text

I really appreciate the work of Robert Truelove. His straight forward honesty is refreshing in the world of textual criticism.
