Ephesians 5:4

Be Cautious with Your Words

 

Eph 5:4  Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 

        1.     Refrain From These Forms of Speech:

a.     Do not use obscenities

                                               i.     Colossians 3:8 

                                             ii.     Ephesians 4:29 

b.     Do not be caught up in foolish talking

                                               i.     Proverbs 12:23 

                                             ii.     Proverbs 15:2 

c.     Do not use suggestive humor

                                               i.     Matthew 12:33-37 

d.     Because these things are not appropriate for the believer

                                               i.     James 3:4-9 

          2.     Rather Instead Speak This:

a.     Be a people of gratefulness

                                               i.     Gratefulness is beautiful

1.     Psalm 33:1 

                                             ii.     Sing gratefulness to God

1.     Ephesians 5:19-20 

                                           iii.     Pray with gratefulness

1.     Philippians 4:6 

                                            iv.     Everything we do is to be done with a spirit of gratefulness

1.     1 Thessalonians 5:18 

                                             v.     Become a part of the great chorus of gratefulness

1.     2 Corinthians 4:14-15

Be Chaste

Eph 5:3  But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 

          1.     The Apostle Paul Commands Us to Abstain from All:

a.      Fornication

                                               i.     The Greek word Paul uses here is: πορνεία porneia

1.     The Old Testament commands us to not commit adultery

a.      Exodus 20:14 

2.     Jesus reinstitutes the command with further restrictions

a.      Matthew 5:27-28 

3.     Which mean that all sexual relations outside of the marriage covenant are wrong

a.      Homosexuality - Romans 1:27 

b.     Prostitution - 1 Corinthians 6:15-18 

c.      Pornography - 2 Timothy 2:22 

4.     Does this mean that all sexual relations are wrong?

a.      Hebrew 13:4-5 

5.     God’s design for this kind of love to be only enjoyed within the bounds of the marriage covenant

a.      Proverbs 5:18 

b.     Uncleanness

                                               i.     Sexual immorality always leads to impurity. Sexual sins never satisfy, and the heart is drawn away by them

1.     James 1:13-15; Galatians 5:19 

                                             ii.     Paul was brokenhearted over the impurity of the Corinthian Church

1.     2 Corinthians 12:21 

c.      Covetousness

                                               i.     Sexual sin is never satisfied, it is like a craving monster that will destroy us

1.     Paul thought he was a pretty good guy until he got to the last commandment

a.      Romans 7:7-8 

2.     The last commandment revealed to Paul how much trouble he was in

a.      Romans 7:15-16 

3.     Paul began to live in terror of the lust within his own heart

a.      Romans 7:21-24 

4.     Paul finally realized that his only hope was the sacrifice of Jesus

a.      Romans 7:25 

           2.     Rather We are to be a Bastian of Truth and Light

a.      How do we find hope in a world that is being destroyed by sexual sin?

                                               i.     Colossians 3:2-5

Walk In Love

 

Eph 5:2  And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 

           1.     We Are to Walk in Love

a.     Everything we are to do is in Love - 1Corinthians 16:13-14 

b.     Everything we are to be is Love - 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:3 

           2.     By Following the Example of How Jesus’s Loves Us

a.     Jesus gave Himself as an Offering - Leviticus 1:1-5 

b.     Jesus gave Himself as a Sacrifice

                                               i.     He gave Himself for us corporately - Ephesians 5:25-27 

                                             ii.     He gave Himself for us individually - Galatians 2:20 

                                           iii.     He gave Himself for us completely

1.     Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 10:11-12 

c.     Jesus’s gift of love was well-pleasing to the Father

                                               i.     The Father sent His Son

1.     The Father gave the Son so we could live - John 3:16 

2.     The Father gave the Son because He loves us - Romans 8:32 

3.     The Father loves the Son because He was willing to die for us

a.     John 10:15-18 

                                             ii.     Yet the Son knew the cost

1.     He knew the pain - Mark 10:33-34 

2.     He knew He was to be cursed - Galatians 3:13 

3.     He knew He would be forsaken - Matthew 27:46 

4.     He knew that it would take determination - Luke 9:51 

5.     He knew He did not have to do it - Matthew 26:52-54 

6.     He knew the joy that was coming - Hebrews 12:2 

7.     He knew it was for our redemption - Ephesians 1:7 

d.     We are to follow Jesus’ example by:

                                               i.     By having the mind of Jesus - Philippians 2:5-8 

                                             ii.     By being transformed by the glory of Jesus - 2 Corinthians 3:18 

                                           iii.     By keeping yourself in the love of Jesus - Jude 1:21 

                                            iv.     By being willing to lay down our life for others - 1 John 3:16 

                                             v.     By giving to others - Philippians 4:18 

                                            vi.     By being a Savour to God, like Jesus was - 2 Corinthians 2:14-15

           1.     You are to Imitate God

a.     Is it possible for humans imitate the Divine Nature?

                                               i.     God has two categories of His divine attributes

1.     The Incommunicable attributes

a.     His Independence (or Aseity) - Exodus 3:14 

b.     His Eternality - Isaiah 41:4 

c.     His Omniscience - Psalm 33:13 

d.     His Omnipotence - Romans 11:35-36 

e.     His Omnipresence - Hebrews 1:3 

2.     The Communicable attributes

a.     His Holiness - 1 Peter 1:15-16 

b.     His Righteousness - Psalm 119:137-138 

c.     His Love - Matthew 5:44-45 

d.     His Mercy - Ephesians 2:4 

e.     His Longsuffering - 1 Timothy 1:16 

f.      His Faithfulness - Deuteronomy 7:9 

g.     His Forgiveness - Ephesians 4:32 

            2.     You are to Imitate God, Because You are His Child

a.     Who are the Children of God?

                                               i.     Those who are not:

1.     Ephesians 2:1-3 

                                             ii.     Those who are:

1.     God’s children are adopted - Ephesians 1:3-5 

2.     God’s children are adopted through faith - Ephesians 1:13 

3.     God’s children are now members of His Family - Ephesians 2:19 

4.     God’s Children are to put off their old nature - Ephesians 4:24 

5.     God’s Children are empowered by His Love - 1 John 3:1-2
